Earthrise from Lunar Orbiter, August 1966.

Two years before the Apollo 8 Earthrise, NASA’s Lunar Orbiter probe sent back this remarkable picture. Lunar Orbiter’s purpose was to survey lunar landing sites for Apollo and photographs of Earth were not on the mission schedule. However, when it got to the Moon they managed to swivel the craft back to photograph the Earth. It put the rest of the mission at risk, but it worked. Were the engineers perhaps influenced by Stewart Brand’s campaign earlier that year for a picture of the whole Earth?
The photograph has recently been digitally enhanced, see links.
